I first lived In Japan as a foreign student, 20 years ago. That is when I first discovered the beauty of travelling in Japan. That is when I found one of my favorite spots on earth – Yamadera.
I never forgot the stunning view from the temple, of snowy mountains and valleys, clearly visible through the crisp, clean air. I distinctly remember being rewarded with this magnificent view after the long climb up, and enjoying a cup of hot tea from my thermos.

Now that I am living in Japan again, I wanted to share this ‘piece of paradise’ with my family too. As the pandemic restrictions were slowly being loosened at the end of this winter, we decided to make the visit. It had been snowing heavily in Yamagata, but the on the day of the visit the snow suddenly stopped.

Yamadera is the popular name for Risshaku-ji, located on a cliff’s edge at the top of a mountain. There are 1,015 steps to the temple, and there are numerous statues and inscriptions to admire along the way. While it was not snowing that day, there was still plenty of snow and ice everywhere around us. We took as many rests as we needed, as the climb was slippery, and my 9 year-old daughter was getting tired. My 13 year-old son really enjoyed the challenging climb, and even helped carry his sister’s backpack and our thermos.

Finally, we made it to the top. The view was as stunning as I had remembered. A vast, sweeping vista of mountains, valleys, and tiny houses. Everything was covered with snow, giving it a clean and beautiful appearance. We opened our thermos and sipped hot tea in the cold air, in memory of having done the same the first time I visited. Even my daughter understood that, part of the beauty of this place, is in the hardship of the climb. She was very proud to have made it to the top. We took many pictures, both of the view and of us together in ‘beautiful Japan’. We were reluctant to leave, but all too soon it was time to go.

Going down was harder, as we need to avoid slipping on the icy stairs. The hard working caretakers at the temple had chipped some of the ice away, to make it easier, but it was still tricky. My husband even slid down one staircase, but fortunately didn’t get hurt. The children laughed because it looked like dad was ‘sliding down a toboggan’.

At the bottom of the mountain, we lied down in the snow to rest, and the children made angel shapes in the snow. I felt happy that I could now share my memories of Yamadera with my family.

私が初めて日本に住んだのは、20年前、留学生の時でした。その時、私は初めて日本を旅することの素晴らしさを知りました。その時、地球上で最も好きな場所の一つ、山寺に出会いました。お寺から見える雪山と渓谷の素晴らしい景色は、澄んだ空気の中ではっきりと見ることができ、忘れられない思い出となりました。長い登山の後、魔法瓶に入れた熱いお茶を飲みながら、この素晴らしい眺めを堪能したことをはっきりと覚えています。

再び日本に住むことになった私は、この「楽園の一片」を家族にも紹介したいと思いました。この冬の終わりにパンデミック規制が徐々に緩和されたので、私たちは訪問を決心しました。山形では大雪が降っていましたが、訪問当日は突然雪が止みました。

山寺として有名な山頂の崖っぷちにある立石寺。そこまでは1,015段の階段があり、その途中には数多くの像や碑文があり、鑑賞することができます。この日は雪は降っていなかったものの、周囲には雪と氷がたくさん残っていました。登りは滑りやすく、9歳の娘も疲れてきたので、必要なだけ休憩を取りました。13歳の息子は、妹のリュックサックや魔法瓶を運ぶのを手伝ってくれたりして、とても楽しそうに登っていました。

そして、ついに頂上までたどり着きました。その景色は、記憶していたとおりの素晴らしいものでした。山、谷、小さな家など、広大な景色が一面に広がっていました。すべてが雪に覆われ、清らかで美しい姿を見せていました。私たちは魔法瓶を開けて、初めて訪れたときに同じことをしたのを思い出しながら、冷たい空気の中で熱いお茶を飲みました。娘も、この場所の美しさの一つは、登山の苦労にあることを理解していました。娘は、頂上まで登れたことをとても誇りに思っていました。私たちは、「美しい日本」の景色と私たちの写真をたくさん撮りました。私たちは帰りたくなくなりましたが、あまりにも早く、その時がきました。

氷の張った階段で滑らないようにしなければならないので、下るのが大変でした。お寺の管理人さんが、氷を削ってくれたので、楽になりましたが、それでも大変でした。主人は階段を滑り落ちたのですが、幸い怪我をすることはありませんでした。子どもたちは、お父さんが「ソリに乗って滑っている」ように見えて、笑っていました。

麓では雪の上に寝そべって休み、子どもたちは雪の上で天使の形を作りました。山寺の思い出を家族で共有できるようになったことを幸せに感じました。
